Critical length of encased stone columns

چکیده
Encased stone columns are vertical inclusions in soft soils formed by gravel wrapped usually with a geotextile. Their critical length is the one where further lengthening of column provides negligible improvement and it therefore not effective to build longer than it. This paper aims obtain common values using simplified two-dimensional axisymmetric full three-dimensional finite element analyses. A uniform soil layer linear elastic perfectly plastic behaviour considered for sake simplicity. For studied cases, around 1.3–2.5 times footing diameter encased columns, slightly lower ordinary namely 1.1–1.9. The encasement found be length. value related extent deformation that may used decide design phase without need parametric As first approximation, general 2 2.5 respectively. • Parametric numerical analyses performed study columns. Critical should expressed as function width. zone deformations present. geosynthetic larger non-encased ones.

Numerical Analysis of Geosynthetic-Encased Stone Columns under Laterally Loads
Out of all methods for ground improvement, stone column became more popular these days due to its simple construction and economic consideration. Installation of stone column especially in loose fine graded soil causes increasing in load bearing capacity and settlement reduction. Encased granular stone columns (EGCs) are commonly subjected to vertical load. However, they may also be subjected t...
متن کاملModeling Stone Columns
This paper reviews the main modeling techniques for stone columns, both ordinary stone columns and geosynthetic-encased stone columns. The paper tries to encompass the more recent advances and recommendations in the topic. Regarding the geometrical model, the main options are the "unit cell", longitudinal gravel trenches in plane strain conditions, cylindrical rings of gravel in axial symmetry ...
متن کاملFailure Process of Stone Columns in Collapsible Soils
Many countries in the word have loose and unstable soils encompassing a wide range ofgeological materials, which when inundated, may collapse and cause very significant distress to the structure. Stone columns have been used to strengthen such soils; even so, there are still cases where failure has occurred. In this technical note, the process and causes of stone column failure in reinforcing c...

Partially Encased Composite (PEC) column is one of the recent achievements in the field of composite columns. This paper presents a combined experimental and theoretical study on the mechanical performances of six octagonal PEC columns subjected to axial compressive and bending moment loading. The major different between them was the concrete reinforcement details. The parameters studied in the...
متن کاملNumerical and physical modeling of soft soil slope stabilized with stone columns
There can be many reasons for engineers to place the footings near a slope such as leakage of suitable sites or architectural considerations. One of the approaches to increase the amount of bearing capacity, especially in soft soils, is adding stone columns to the soil. In this research, the behavior of a strip footing placed near a stone column reinforced clayey slope was investigated. For thi...
